Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
