Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Significant Alliance Formed By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's older political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
