EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
