Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered numerous other vandalized vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state initial examinations suggest the fluid was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; investigators are not yet aware of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities announced they were working "to solve the case" and have appealed to the public for details.
An important official said the incident left him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and revives the pain of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, referring to the death of nine individuals by a gunman targeting people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
